Dyson Airwrap vs Shark FlexStyle: Which One Should You Buy?

Dyson Airwrap vs Shark FlexStyle: Which One Should You Buy?

How we researched this: We did not personally test either tool. This comparison is based on manufacturer pages and independent reviews, and we label which is which. Prices were checked on October 21, 2026 and change often.

Introduction

If you’re deciding between the Dyson Airwrap and the Shark FlexStyle, the short answer is that the Shark FlexStyle is the better value for most people, and the Dyson Airwrap is the better choice if you want its app-guided curling, quieter operation and more polished design and can justify roughly $280 more.

Both tools use air to wrap hair around a barrel, so you don’t clamp hair against a hot iron. Both also double as dryers. The real differences are in the details: how each handles curling, how the attachments are set up and how much of the price is accessories versus engineering.

On Dyson’s US site, the Dyson Airwrap i.d. was listed at $649.99 when we checked. SharkNinja’s US store listed the Shark FlexStyle HD440BK at $369.99. That is a $280 gap, or about 43% less for Shark.

Quick Verdict: Which One Should You Buy?

  • Best value: Shark FlexStyle. You get two curlers, two brushes, a diffuser and a concentrator for far less money.
  • Best for frequent curling and convenience: Dyson Airwrap i.d. Its app-programmed curl timing is aimed at people who curl often and want less guesswork.
  • Best for beginners on a budget: Shark FlexStyle, unless you specifically want Dyson’s guided curl sequence.
  • Best for natural waves and curls: Shark’s kit includes a curl-defining diffuser. Dyson sells separate Curly+Coily configurations, so check which kit you’re buying.
  • Best if you hate noise or want a sturdier feel: Dyson, based on independent reviewer observations covered below.

One caveat applies to everything that follows. Shark has also launched a newer FlexStyle (the NextGen IonCurl), and Dyson sells several Airwrap versions. We compare the two models that have the clearest US listings.

Dyson’s US page did not show enough detail for every row, so we marked those rows “not confirmed” instead of guessing.

1. Price and Overall Value

Shark’s FlexStyle HD440BK costs $369.99 on the manufacturer’s site, and the kit includes the four main styling attachments plus two curlers. Dyson’s i.d. was listed at $649.99 in special-edition colors, and it was out of stock on the page we reviewed.

That means you’re paying around $280 more for Dyson. What you get for it is mainly the app-connected curling, Dyson’s engineering and build, and, per independent reviewers, quieter operation. You are not clearly paying for more attachments. Shark’s box is generous.

If you check Amazon, compare the exact model number and what’s in the box, since third-party listings often differ. Check the current Shark FlexStyle price on Amazon and check the current Dyson Airwrap i.d. price on Amazon.

Shark’s storefront also shows paid add-ons at $39.99 each, and a storage case at $59.99 that isn’t listed in the HD440BK box. If you want a case, factor that in. For a broader look at the market, see our guide to the best hair multi-stylers in 2026.

2. Attachments and Styling Versatility

Shark gives you two 1.25″ Auto-Wrap Curlers, an oval brush, a paddle brush, a curl-defining diffuser and a styling concentrator. Tech Advisor noted that its diffuser is a plus, because Dyson didn’t include one in the comparison kit it reviewed.

Dyson’s attachment sets vary by kit. Dyson says the i.d. adds new attachments, including a conical barrel, and that all attachments are compatible with earlier Airwrap devices. Independent reviewers have praised Dyson’s choice of barrel sizes. Tech Advisor, reviewing an earlier Airwrap, liked having 30mm and 40mm options, while Shark offered one barrel size.

The practical takeaway is that Dyson offers more barrel choices, and Shark offers a more complete all-around kit for the price.

3. Curling Performance and Curl Longevity

In Tech Advisor’s side-by-side test, the results were “largely similar,” with Dyson showing slightly more definition after a sweaty workout. That test used an older Airwrap, not the i.d., and the reviewer noted the smaller Dyson barrel may have helped.

So there’s no strong independent evidence that one tool makes curls last dramatically longer. Curl longevity depends far more on:

  • Starting hair condition. Damp, towel-dried hair generally works best. Dyson’s own product guidance describes its pre-style cream as being for damp, towel-dried hair.
  • Section size. Smaller, manageable sections wrap more reliably.
  • Dryness. Let each curl cool and set before releasing it.
  • The cool shot. Use it at the end of each curl to help set the shape.
  • Products. A light styling product can help some hair types and weigh down others.
  • Conditions. Humidity, hair texture and hair condition all matter.

Neither tool guarantees lasting curls, especially on hair that struggles to hold a style.

4. Drying Speed and Everyday Blowouts

Shark’s twist design converts the styler into a more conventional-looking dryer, which Tech Advisor called its best feature. It felt less sturdy because of the hinge, though.

Dyson’s approach relies on attachments. Tech Advisor found Shark’s tool felt hotter and dried faster in its test, while Dyson dried “relatively quickly.” Shark also claims its newer IonCurl model dries faster than the Airwrap i.d., citing third-party testing. That is a manufacturer claim, and it applies to a different Shark model than the one in our table.

If you blow-dry daily, Shark’s dryer mode is likely more convenient. If you mainly curl and occasionally dry, Dyson’s strengths matter more.

5. Heat Control and Hair Protection

Both brands make heat claims. Shark says FlexStyle measures and regulates temperature 1,000 times per second. Dyson’s marketing says its Airwrap i.d. delivers long-lasting curls “with no heat damage,” compared with the original Airwrap.

Those are manufacturer claims. We found no independent test in our research that proves either tool causes zero damage, and no tool can promise that. Tech Advisor’s reviewer observed that hotter air generally means more risk to hair, and judged the Dyson “almost certainly the kinder tool” because it felt less hot in her test. That is a reasoned observation, not a damage measurement.

Whatever you buy, use lower heat when you can, use heat protectant, and don’t style hair repeatedly at high settings.

6. Which Is Better for Different Hair Types?

Our recommendations below are editorial reasoning, labeled by basis. We haven’t tested either tool, so treat them as starting points.

Hair typeLikely better fitBasis
Fine or thinDyson, if gentler heat is your priorityReviewer observation on heat; not damage-tested
Thick or coarseEither; check barrel sizeEditorial reasoning; Dyson offers more barrel choices
LongDyson (more barrel options)Editorial reasoning from barrel variety

Straight or wavyEitherBoth marketed for it
Curly or coilyShark for the diffuser; Dyson’s Curly+Coily kit is also worth checkingKit contents; Tech Advisor says standard Dyson tools may not suit curly hair
Frizz-proneTechnique matters more than brandNo reliable evidence either tool prevents frizz
Struggles to hold curlsNeither is guaranteedPrep and technique matter most

Manufacturers say both tools are suited to a range of hair types. Shark describes FlexStyle as suitable for straight, wavy, curly and coily hair. Dyson sells separate kits for different hair types.

7. Ease of Use, Weight, Noise, and Maintenance

Tech Advisor found Dyson’s controls more intuitive, with the cool shot built into the power button, and said the Airwrap was “surprisingly quiet” while the FlexStyle was louder. That review covered an older Airwrap, so the i.d. may differ.

Which?, in a 2024 UK comparison, weighed the tools with a round brush attached and found Shark heavier. It also found both offer three temperatures, three speeds and a cool shot. Those were UK models. We can’t confirm US i.d. weight.

The i.d.’s app also adds filter-maintenance prompts and troubleshooting notifications, according to Dyson. Neither company’s cleaning routine is covered in depth here, so check each user manual.

9. Who Should Buy the Dyson Airwrap?

Buy Dyson if you curl your hair often, want automated timing, value a quieter and more refined tool, and see the extra cost as spread over years of use. For more depth, read our in-depth Dyson Airwrap review.

10. Who Should Buy the Shark FlexStyle?

Buy Shark if you want the most for your money, a real dryer plus a styler, a diffuser for natural texture, and a lower-risk first purchase.

11. Is Either Tool Worth Buying at Full Price?

Only if you’ll use it regularly. If you curl twice a month, a basic curling tool or a good dryer may serve you better. If you style several times a week, either tool’s cost spreads out quickly. We haven’t calculated cost-per-use, because it depends entirely on how often you’d use it.

Look at what’s in the box and whether you’d use every attachment. A kit you use half of is a worse deal than a smaller kit you use fully. Also check for sales and current warranty terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Shark FlexStyle as good as the Dyson Airwrap?
In the one independent side-by-side we found, results were very similar. Dyson had small edges in noise, build and definition. Shark wins on price.

Which is better for fine hair?
Dyson may suit fine hair if gentler heat is your concern, but that’s reasoning, not proof. Use lower heat on either.

Which is better for thick or long hair?
Dyson’s wider barrel choices may help. Shark’s larger blowout brushes can speed up smoothing.

Which tool gives curls that last longer?
No strong evidence says either does. Prep, technique and your hair type matter more.

Is the Dyson Airwrap worth the extra money?
Only if you value the app-guided curling, quieter use and build. Otherwise Shark is the better value.

Can the Shark FlexStyle replace a regular hair dryer?
Shark designed it to twist into a dryer, and reviewers found it dried quickly. Whether it fully replaces yours depends on your hair thickness and routine.

Can either tool curl dry hair?
We couldn’t confirm this for either exact model. These tools are generally designed for damp hair, so check each manual.

Which is easier for beginners?
Dyson’s automated curl timing is built for ease. Shark’s auto-wrap curlers are also designed to be simple.

Are the attachments interchangeable?
No. Dyson attachments work with Airwrap devices, and Shark attachments work with FlexStyle. Dyson says its new attachments work with earlier Airwraps.

Which is better for curly or coily hair?
Shark includes a diffuser, and Dyson offers Curly+Coily kits. Compare each kit’s contents. Neither guarantees results.

Final Verdict

For most readers, the Shark FlexStyle is the best value: a capable kit at a much lower price. The Dyson Airwrap i.d. makes sense if you’ll use the app-guided curling often and want a quieter, more refined tool.
